Special Comments: Coronado's stretch of sand along the Pacific Ocean is as naturally scenic as any in San Diego and the beach alone is certainly enough reason to visit; but a trip to Coronado is just not complete without a walk through the historic Hotel Del Coronado. The "Del," as the locals like to call it, is a vacation destination for the rich and famous from all over the world.

Coronado Municipal Beach offers excellent conditions for swimming and surfing. The surf is strongest from mid-summer through late fall when south swells from Southern Hemisphere winter storms and Mexican tropical storms can hit the south-facing beach with full force. Check with lifeguards for hazardous conditions and the safest places to swim.

The center of beach activity is north of the Hotel Del. The beach south of the Del has limited parking, only a thin strip of sand, and a paved boardwalk/bike path. The beach can become crowded during the summer and parking along the popular northern section is limited to curbside street parking. On hot summer days, plan to arrive early or park several blocks from the beach.

The Hotel Del has hosted guests the likes of Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor and Charles Lindbergh. The Del has also been the backdrop of many big-screen and television productions, including "Some Like It Hot" starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. The ground level of the hotel, which is open to the public, features pictorial displays that document the Del's many brushes with greatness.

The northern section of Coronado's beach is reserved as an off-leash dog area. To access the dog run you must pass through a narrow corridor from Ocean Boulevard along the fence at North Island Naval Air Station Gate 5. Dogs must be leashed at all times while transiting to and from the dog run. Dogs are prohibited in all other Coronado Beach areas.

Food/dining: Food choices range from moderately priced delis and taco shops to higher-end restaurants. Most of the eating establishments are located along nearby Orange Avenue between 10th Street and Silver Strand Boulevard.

Restrooms: Public restrooms are located behind the lifeguard station at the foot of Isabella Avenue.
